This design is in response to the London Festival of Architecture and The Fitzrovia partnership
competition, ‘Fitz&Sits’.
In a city where functionality and affordability dominate, imagination and creativity often
take a back-seat. Fitzrovia, known for it’s leading role in furniture design within the capital is
one of the few areas that truly embraces creativity. This design competition offers a unique
opportunity to contribute to this dynamic and inspiring context. The design: to create a bench
that offers more than just seating. A playful, interactive structure that unlocks childhood
memories, encourages exploration and generates curiosity.
This design challenges the conventional approach to public realm infrastructure, blending
functionality with creativity and offering users a reason to pause and connect with their
surroundings. It will remind residents and visitors alike that play isn’t just for children, it’s a
vital part of human connection and well-being. Inspired by the ‘Beaded Maze’. A rainbow
of shapes awaiting their journey along slides, loops and bends. A simple joy for all of those
patiently waiting - children and adults alike.
