Sights to Sites

City views. In a capital as dense as London, city views are often reserved for the wealthy, only available from the penthouses and skyscrapers, overlooking the smaller buildings and lower class.

The opportunity of free access to several incredible viewing galleries in the Eastern City is wonderful, it allows all the chance to see the capital from an incredible and unique perspective. Unfortunately these opportunities aren’t well known. This wayfinder was designed to address that.

When we think city views, we immediately think of looking down from a higher vantage point, where the eye can unobstructively observe much of the cityscape at once. Why should those higher up be the only ones with a view? What if those on the ground too could look up and discover something; discover these viewing platforms. A two way exchange, a series of sign posts physically and visually pointing towards the viewing platform. Sights to Sites.

To visually direct the navigators to the viewing platform we proposed the fun and interactive use of periscopes, the instruments commonly associated with submarines. By integrating these within wayfinders we can literally describe, physically point and visibly show the destination, a unique twist on wayfinding that has yet to be explored.

Learn more, See more, Hear more. The theme that would connect the variety of installations across the eastern city, in unison via a pallet of colours and materials.

Learn more - Strategically positioned information boards coupled with accessible seating encouraging those who pause to read and those who read to pause

See more - A telescopic view up towards the viewing galleries from an entirely new perspective as if by magic. No smoke, just mirrors. The option for a ‘see more’ route.

Hear more - Playful street furniture encouraging laughs and interaction with focal points facilitating the transport of sound.

With a required lifetime of over 2 years the robustness of the designs are a necessity. To align with the elegance of the viewing galleries the quality is also of importance.

A consistent material to be considered across all designs will be recycled tiles, either partially cladding the pathway or the very installations themselves. This will help to bring a holistic approach across the design.
